Handheld Console Aiming to Compete with Steam Deck
This summer, the SuiPlay0X1 is set to launch, positioning itself as a competitor to the Steam Deck by incorporating cryptocurrency functionalities. We had the opportunity to test the device at Token2049, where we explored its main features and capabilities. Notably, the popular game Elden Ring ran effortlessly on the device, maintaining high graphical fidelity and showcasing a crisp display.
Overview of the SuiPlay0X1
The SuiPlay0X1 is a handheld gaming console powered by cryptocurrencies, scheduled for release this summer. It aims to challenge the Steam Deck by allowing users to enjoy traditional PC games alongside blockchain-enabled experiences. During our hands-on experience at Token2049 in Dubai, the device impressed us with its sturdy build, impressive specifications, and a vibrant screen, but its standout feature is undoubtedly its cryptocurrency integration.
Impressive Display Quality
Upon handling the device, the superior display quality was immediately apparent. While OLED screens are often preferred in handheld consoles, the SuiPlay0X1 features a 7-inch LCD panel that impresses with its color accuracy and a bold, bezel-less touchscreen design.
Performance During Gameplay
While testing Elden Ring, the SuiPlay0X1 consistently maintained 30 frames per second, delivering a smooth gaming experience without compromising on visuals. The device’s ability to run the game at higher graphical settings allowed for vibrant colors and deep blacks, with minimal backlight bleed.
Powerful Specifications
The device’s performance is bolstered by its robust hardware, which includes an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U CPU, an AMD Ryzen 780M graphics card, and 512GB of SSD storage. Priced at $599, the SuiPlay0X1 is marketed as a premium handheld PC, though its LCD screen may disappoint some, especially when compared to the Steam Deck’s OLED option.
Expert Insights on Display Quality
Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Mysten Labs—developers of the SuiPlay0X1 in partnership with Playtron—asserted that it boasts “one of the highest-end LCD screens available.” Our experience confirmed that the display was indeed sharp and visually appealing.
Ergonomics and Design Considerations
However, the device’s ergonomic design may not be as comfortable as its competitors. With a largely flat rear, extended gaming sessions could lead to hand fatigue, particularly in contrast to the more natural hand fit offered by the Steam Deck. Further experience will be necessary to assess its comfort during prolonged use.
Control Layout
The SuiPlay0X1 comes equipped with a full suite of controls, including dual joysticks, a d-pad, four triggers, and four PlayStation-style buttons, along with basic function buttons for navigation. Overall, the controls felt of high quality, with the joysticks being particularly notable for their comfortable grip.
Innovative Operating System
The device’s primary highlight is its Linux-based Playtron operating system, which Abiodun claims can be installed on various platforms, including computers and mobile devices. He emphasized the need for a new gaming operating system that breaks away from the confines of single-platform ecosystems, advocating for more open systems.
Encouraging Developer Adoption
Mysten Labs envisions the SuiPlay0X1 as a showcase of the Playtron OS’s potential, encouraging other developers to adopt the platform for their own devices, whether they excel in specifications, ergonomics, or affordability.
Gaming Compatibility
PlaytronOS is designed to be compatible with games from popular platforms such as Steam, Epic Games, and GOG, as well as titles on the Sui network. Abiodun highlighted this as a key advantage, particularly since the Steam Deck requires complex workarounds to play non-Steam games, while Valve restricts crypto games on its platform.
Crypto Game Support at Launch
When it launches, the SuiPlay0X1 will support seven cryptocurrency games natively, including Xociety, Warped Universe, Panzerdogs, and ONE Fight Arena—each titles built on the Sui network.
User-Friendly Crypto Integration
The device abstracts the complexities of cryptocurrency from the user, requiring only a standard Web2 login to access crypto-centric games. Mysten Labs explained that users can engage with these games seamlessly through a backend-created SuiPlay0X1 Wallet. However, due to connectivity issues at the event, we couldn’t test any crypto games or related functionalities.
Wallet and Token Support
The SuiPlay0X1 Wallet is based on the Sui blockchain and is confirmed to support the SUI token along with the newly announced Game Dollar stablecoin. Mysten Labs assured that titles from other networks will also be playable, provided they are available through compatible storefronts.
Unique Selling Proposition
The core appeal of the SuiPlay0X1 lies in its crypto gaming capabilities. While various handheld devices cater to traditional gaming via Steam and Epic Games, none have successfully integrated cryptocurrency functionalities along with the necessary power for serious gaming.
Future of Crypto Gaming on Handheld Devices
Although titles like Avalanche shooter Off the Grid will be compatible due to their presence on the Epic Games Store, games such as Axie Infinity, which operates on the Ronin network and isn’t available on Epic, won’t be playable initially on this device. The Solana Saga mobile phone can handle Android games and a few Solana-related titles but lacks the specifications necessary for high-performance PC gaming. Meanwhile, simpler consoles like the BitBoy One and PSG1 cater to casual and retro gaming but do not compete with PC-level handhelds.
Looking Ahead to Launch
If the SuiPlay0X1’s cryptocurrency integration proves as seamless as advertised and cross-chain compatibility is implemented, the device could carve out a distinct niche in the gaming industry. However, it remains to be seen whether mainstream gamers will embrace it, particularly amid a slowdown in the broader crypto gaming sector. The answer will become clear this summer as the SuiPlay0X1 begins to reach consumers.
